Rattle/tickling sound from the back of CU2

Post by Orangetee » Fri Jan 22, 2010 6:08 pm

Hi fellow CU2 folks,

Besides the engine pinging issue, there is also an irritating rattle/ticking sound that comes from the rear of the car. After much trouble-shooting, i reckon the sound maybe coming from driver's side, boot area, one of the metal joints.

Searching through the internet, apparently some accord owners (sedan & coupe) in the US are also experiencing this issue.

For those who are experiencing this, maybe we can meet up as more heads are better in finding solutions. PM me your contact and i will initiate a meeting.

Joe

Yea its the rear parcel shelf problem. I heard some TSX folks did a very cheap 50cent diy resolution to fix it. I havent personally tried it yet though. Look thru the Acura forum, think shld be one of the top problems faced. I'll paste the link if I find it again.

BTW, the new 2010 models have a black coloured parcel shelf.. :)

Hi,

Body creaks are usually caused by movement between two or more sheet metal pieces that are next to each other. When you roll over bumps or turn into an sloping driveway, normal body flex causes the sheet metal to move, resulting in a creak.

Fold down the rear seats and get someone to "climb" into the boot area to identify the "source" while u drive; drive over some bumps and dips, and turn into some driveways.. The creaking/rattling sound should be more prominent with the seats down assuming if it's coming from the boot area.

Once u've identified the source, perform the following:

1. Do not pry any of the metal sheets apart or use expanding form.
2. Use good old WD40 to spray at areas where the metal sheets meet.

The above should be a 30-60 min fix including a test drive to confirm the resolution. The only downside is that your boot now smells of WD40 instead of new fabric; the smell should go away in a day or 2.

The above resolution is based on personal experience.

Fyi .. here're some potential problem areas:

Thanks for the pictures and instructions bro. I'll give it a try and hopefully it will resolve the irritation.

Might be worth a try. My sound is as though the speaker covers are rattling though.

Hi, i got my Accord from Vin car around Oct 09, the car is full of ticking sound. But last week do up the sound proofing that cost me $700 for the whole even rear boot area that hold speaker. Now zero sound. Now very happy as no funny sound and nice music.

AccordEuro - I did 4 doors and front wheel arch sound proof but it doesn't resolve the tickling/rattling sound. Infact it makes the car quieter and magnifies the rattle...

Lingamair - i hear the rattle on driver's side, closer to seat beat adjustment knob near to our right ear. I have tried removing the speaker's cover but the rattle still remains. If problem is with the rear parcel shelf, i have sprayed silicon at the weld joints. Tried the hammering of the joint gaps too. Maybe must knock even harder to close off the joint gaps as pointed out by autoglymer.

The rattle-puzzle rages on...

HI autoglymer,

thanks for your picture illustration. I have finally solved the irritating ticking sound from my boot by spraying wd40 at the suggested spots from your pic.

Bro, i understand the irritation. Somehow i still cannot pin point the exact source of the rattle.

One thing i know is that when the weather is hot, the rattle is not so obvious. This may point to expanding metal. Thus my deduction is that the rattle could be the joints & body and unlikely wiring hitting each other.

Let's keep one another informed if we find the source of the rattle or come up with a solution.

Did you try to spray some oil to the metal joints? I solved my noise problem by spraying wd40 at the joints in the boot area.

I sprayed at exactly the joints that autoglymer posted in a few posting earlier. In fact, I was kaisu and sprayed almost all the metal areas which I can reach without removing any parts from the boot.
