Idle Oil press issues... Help needed

Post by Ken_dc5 » Thu Nov 07, 2013 2:03 pm

Hey bros... I've currently got some issues and was hoping that all the expert gurus out there can assist me on.

I'm running on a k20a block which was recently rebuilt with high comp wiseco pistons and Brian crower rods. I've replaced all my thrust bearings, piston rings etc for new ones. Even my oil pump is new. Did a full tune about a week back. So here's the problem. This block was bought over from a fren. When the block was in his ride, his idle oil pressure is at around 3.0 x100 kpa. But after I took over the block with it being entirely overhauled, my warm idle oil press is at 2.6 x100 kpa.

So here's the thing. When my engine is on full load, my oil press is at 7.0x100 kpa. But after a couple rounds of hard driving. My idle oil pressure drops to a ridiculous low reading of 1.9x100 kpa instead of maintaining at 2.6x100 kpa. If I stop hard driving the car, it will slowly climb back up to 2.6x100 KPa.

I tried switching out my oil from 10w40 (FK massimo racing) to 15w50 (motul 300V). Even changing my defi oil pressure sensor to new ones. But I'm Still having the same issue. I'm trying not to remove the entire block to check the internals due to the high cost of labour. I seriously hope it's not an engine issue as I Juz built this motor about a month back.

So can any gurus/experts give any advise on what maybe causing this issue?? Your feedbacks are greatly appreciated!!!

Nothing wrong. Oil temp at high temperature, the pressure will be low. Even at 1.9 at idle after a long stress is normal. When oil cool a bit I will climb up. Reving at 7 bar is also normal for a good oil pump.. EVERY THING Is NORMAL leh... Really don't understand what u are trying to achieve.

Hmm... Mayb I wasn't clear in my explanation. Sorry my bad... My oil temp doesn't go above 90degrees when this happens. Why I'm concerned is Bcuz the previous owner' idle oil press didn't drop even when hard drive. My previous engine, even doing 6 hot laps at sepang, the idle oil press also didn't drop. And that is when my oil temp peaks at 120. That's why I'm curious why is this happening now......

Maybe is the tuning for the idle at different RPM. U find out yourself bah. Sometime tuning setting for idling at different temp also play a part.

Rpm is constant at 1k for idle. Just went to shakedown my car today at PG. After hot laps. Full thrott oil press drops by 2bar... Frm 8+ to 6+ after abt 5 hot laps... Haiz sian...

Check for any leakage. U install oil cooler?

If u install oil cooler can be the AN fitings is not the right size and pressure drop. Diff thickness of oil too plays a part. Last would be ur oil pump.
Can try this guy welson.
+6594899818 he does quality oil cooler fittings.

I had the same similiar issue.

However, i`m running a K24 block and Defi Advanced setup as well.

Your oil viscocity plays a part in the pressure when the engine is hot, also, i had the same similiar issue when using the cheap oil adaptor plates.

They tend to expand when hot, hence giving a misread of the oil pressure and when cooldown the reading goes back to normal.

What i`ve found out is that the cheap oil adaptors are garbage,. they leak and they do not hold pressure well, i fixed the issue by ordering a Grex oil adaptor kit with the oil cooler adaptor (you can block if off if you have no oil cooler)

Hope this helps!

Built engines might have different oil pressure due to bearing, piston to wall clearance. Hearing your story, it doesn't seem to have anything wrong. As mentioned earlier, the hotter the oil gets the lower the oil pressure due to viscosity. U might want to try motul 10w40, so far it's the better double Ester based EO which has got more stable oil pressure regardless of oil temp.
