To the left, to the left
Honda's latest Accord probably turns to the right as well, but we'll have to wait till next month to be sure - By Lee Nian Tjoe

ACCORDING TO HONDA: The new Accord goes through its paces on the oval track that unfortunately permitted only left turns. -- PHOTO: HONDA

TOCHIGI, JAPAN - WHEN Torque columnist Andre Lam came back from a test drive of Ferrari's 430 Scuderia a couple of weeks ago, he declared that the car could 'walk on water'.
I have just come back from trying out the new Honda Accord, and I can confidently say that the car can 'turn left'.

Honda deems it fit to carry out the test drive in its Tochigi facility, on a high-speed oval circuit with steep banks. Just like the tracks seen in Days Of Thunder or Cars.

There are definite benefits to doing a test drive in such a location. Like, you never have to stop to ask for directions. All you do is keep turning left.

But it also means that there is no opportunity to try out the car's satellite navigation, which is fine by us since the cars bound for Singapore will not have such a feature.

The new Accord is big. It is so big it dwarfs its predecessor. It is even bigger than Toyota's standard-bearing Camry.

Besides its size, the new Accord is designed to turn heads. If its chiselled facade and strong shoulders don't get your attention, its chunky behind most certainly will.

It has a grand cabin - roomy accommodation peppered with wood accents and a faux metallic finish, set in nicely textured plastics.

The ergonomics are not perfect though. Its clutter of buttons on the centre console for the air-conditioning and hi-fi do need getting used to.

You don't need long to get accustomed to the wealth of space though. You can lounge in the rear seats and enjoy the music.

On the perfectly paved oval track, it appears the new car has better noise insulation. But we won't know for sure until we get to drive it on real roads with real traffic.

On the smooth track, which happens to be wet during the test drive, the Accord is impressive. Its steering, whether pointing straight ahead or to the left, has affirming heft. (I reckon it will venture to the right with similar aplomb.)

The car's generous wheelbase and relatively taut suspension give it good footing during lane changes too.

The Accord will be available with three different engines, all mated to five-speed automatic gearboxes. It starts off with a new 156bhp 2-litre unit. Unlike before, this is a single cam unit and it has been tuned to make more power than the current DOHC one.

Next up is the 180bhp 2.4-litre. But the most interesting one, from a technological viewpoint, is the flagship 3.5-litre V6.

Other than boasting 280bhp of grunt, the engine features Honda's second generation Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), which allows the engine to fire six, four or three cylinders to maximise economy when cruising or move from push to shove when necessary.

The VCM feature is seamless. The only sign of it working is a green 'eco' lamp on the tachometer, which comes on when not all the cylinders are firing.

The lamp lights up when the car is cruising at 120kmh on the track. But with a flex of the right foot, it goes off. The 3.5 does 200kmh with relative ease. It can do more, if not for the rain.

The 3.5 is equipped with ample goodies. It has steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual gear changes. Both front seats have powered adjustments and the car wears bigger wheels (18-inch) and has two exhaust pipes.

Admittedly, it is unlikely to be a mass seller in capacity-conscious Singapore. But Honda reckons it should be able to sell at least 10 a month. We shall see when the car arrives next month.

If it turns right as competently as it does left, it should do well.

If 2008 CM5 has the rear airvents, then it will be the BIGGEST Breakthrough!

If U have read the Sat's Life section, the 2.0L is going for S$100K+. At this price, KM will be killing themselves!

Hi

For Honda Inspire, I did a brief research some time back. I discovered that the Inspire does not offer the all round wishbone suspension that is found in our Thai Cm5 and CL7A/R. The rear suspension is mac struts.
Maybe it is different for 2008.

Hi BlackKnight_CM5,

Maybe you mis-read above news "Under SGD$100,000 for 2-litre with COE"

Prices are expected to be close to Camry:
2.0L around $90K++, but expect much lower standard options
2.4L hovering around +/- $100K
3.5L > $100K+++

On the other hand 2.0 Camry specs are almost as good as 2.4 Camry.

Hi Junning

You are correct in the Accord pricing. :D

Actually, the 2.0 Camry still uses the 4AT, while the 2.4 Camry uses the 5AT.

I understand the 2.4 Camry may switched to 6AT soon.

A promising, new Accord

A promising, new Accord By CY CHEW

Image
Size matters: The new Accord is much bigger and more luxurious than the outgoing model. More importantly, it also outsizes the Toyota Camry and Nissan Cefiro - its two biggest competitors

IT MIGHT have been the best-selling car in the world at one time but in recent years, the Honda Accord has been struggling - especially in Singapore - to keep up with the competition. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, it had been the class leader in its segment here until the Nissan Cefiro and Toyota Camry started showing it a clean set of heels.

Size and fashion-conscious Singaporeans never took to the 'do nothing wrong but nothing fantastic either' Accord - it just became too understated and bland. Hopefully, that will change after the 2008 model was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor show last week.

Sold as the upmarket Honda Inspire in Japan, the new Accord is significantly bigger and more luxurious than the outgoing model. More importantly, it is much bigger than the Toyota Camry and Nissan Cefiro - its two biggest competitors. With a whopping 2,800mm wheelbase - 60mm longer than its predecessor and 25mm longer than the Camry - the Accord boasts even more interior room than Honda's flagship Legend sedan.

To be assembled in Thailand, the Honda Accord will be offered with three engine options. Two four-cylinder engines - a 156 hp two-litre and a 180 hp 2.4-litre - will be joined by a 3.5-litre V6 with 280 hp. All three iVTEC powerplants will be mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, and the 2.4 and 3.5-litre models will feature steering wheel paddle shift controls.

Styling-wise, the new Accord breaks no new ground and that could again be its Achilles heel. But authorised Honda distributor Kah Motor believes customers in this segment will be more impressed by its new-found cabin space and luxury. In fact, it is targeting average monthly sales of 200 units when the Accord is unveiled locally early next month - more than four times what the old model used to do.

At Honda's Tochigi test facility in Japan last week, there was an opportunity to briefly put the new and visibly larger Accord through its paces. The cabin is hushed and insulation levels have apparently been greatly improved. Even at 140 kmh around the high-speed oval, there is little wind noise and the car remains rock stable. It is difficult to judge the new Accord's suspension on the artificially smooth surface of the test track. But what is certain is that its new Variable Gear Ratio steering is accurate and there is little high-speed float.

The 2.4-litre engine can do with more verve but is reasonably hushed, while the 3.5-litre unit makes all the right noises when still cruising with nary a squeak. Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), together with Active Noise Control (ANC), must surely help in this case.

The VCM system operates the 3.5-litre engine in full six-cylinder mode for power, and four- and three-cylinder modes for efficiency. Meanwhile, ANC uses the 270-watt stereo system to help cancel out engine noise, thus ensuring a whisper quiet cabin.

Whether or not the new Accord can regain its place at the sharp point of the pack depends on the public's acceptance of its still unexciting styling. But if space equals sales, then the Accord looks like a potential winner.

Accord CP3

Hi all,

If the 3.5L 0-100 kmh: 8.6 secs is accurate as per news article, looks like GS300 7.2 secs will win the century sprint race.

Here's a Dyno on the US 3.5L Accord CP3 http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-artic ... _id=719873

:D Paddle shift, now tat's a new toy in CM5 worth having.
No rear airvents???

I dun know why they keep promoting the 3.5L, as I doubt there's really a lot of buyers for this capacity.

The 2.4L@180bhp will be significantly attractive.

I find it strange that KM seems to think that SIZE matters whereas BUILT QUALITY is secondary; I would buy a van if that's the criteria. Wonder if anyone in KM even bothers to fingure out why their existing shoddy made-in-Thailand Accord is doing so badly; they even have stocks for pre-facelift models!

I can understand if Honda Japan thinks that Mr Ang, with a bigger butt, needs a bigger car and hence the Inspire (rebranded Accord); the same goes with their one of a kind Odyssey. But made-in-Thailand Inspire (rebranded Accord) for Singapore? Doesn't make alot of sense to me. Perhaps Singapore agrees with me based on their sales figures.

Maybe I've a different mentality or taste. But what I want is the REAL made-in-Japan Honda Accord. Personally, I would prefer an Accord that competes with the 3-series or C-class; read CL7/9. Set the benchmark higher like what they do in Europe! So KM, if u are reading this, please bring in the new made-in-Japan Accord when it becomes avail in 2008. Else I believe many, like me, will have to turn to PIs again. Sigh.

Hi autoglymer,

Some times it's not totally an issue of country of origin, it's just the design, look & feel that affects the individual choice.

Remember when KM 1st brought in the Gen-6 US-made Accord? There were many comments and feedbacks.
Image

And they decided to switch to Japan-made when the facelift Gen-6 was out, but sales didn't pick up either
Image

With strong competition from everywhere, many manufacturers have to expand their capacities and go for cost efficiency by centralising their parts sourcing, lowering thier labour cost and bringing themselves closer to the target market etc... And they tried very hard to cultivate end-user by saying their products are "Made by them" with the same quality. This tag line may be too common, but it's happening everywhere.

Distributors are always tied-up by the export line-up offered by the Principal and left with limited choices. Distributors wanted to but are not officially allowed to sell those domestic models as they're bounded by agreements set by the Principal. Distributors can't do anything but to see the brisk sales of those PIs and having them eating into their market share.

Like one what a motoring senior correspondent always says - Principal are hitting their own legs in this Distributor-PI war, but end of the day it's only either left pocket or right pocket.

But let's hoped that this Gen-8 Accord will give a good showdown for the other competitors and may it makes its way to be the top model for this segment which it has been missing for a long long while.
