only when needed:
1. Engine brake going down hill.
2. Overtake a car when you are already in overdrive mode and you need that extra power. (disengage overdrive briefly to go to D3, accelerate & re-engage it so the car can go to 4th gear when speed is up.).Else, normally leave it at Overdrive.
3. When going up hill. like Genting Cameron kind of hilll.

i engaged gear 2 while travelling on gravel road during this year's tnp challenge.Xrder wrote:Since we are in this topic ,
Anyone tried gear 2 and 1 . I find the those two gears are even weaker than normal D/D3 mode when climbing upslopes . or it somehow feels strange .
Or D1 D2 mode is for something else ?
didnt notice the diff btw this and D3. maybe should try more often.

D2 or D1... gotta go extremely slow & short period only.
Not the speed that you should watch out, but the RPM.
The engine produce best torque in 4200rpm. So lower RPM may not give you more power feeling.
But with less speed, less wind to blow heat away from car, the engine cooling is not effective. So cannot go on that for prolong period.
only used D2 once when I got myself stuck on a remote road in Cameron. about 30 degrees slope and one narrow lane. and upon reaching top, it's a no through road & still at a slope .
Had to do a three point turns using ...maybe 7 to 9 small turns to turn the car around while making sure the car is not rolling over the cliff or down the slope.
never have a change to use D1 yet.
