Problem - Noise during acceleration

Post by Kev10 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:27 pm

Hey All

Need some help. Recently started getting some noise from the left side of the car when it is accelerating. The noise is like a low pitch "thud-thud-thud" sound that increases in frequency with the vehicle speed. It only comes on when the car is accelerating and is louder the harder I accelerate.

I had it checked out by two workshops and the diagnosis is the same, either the driveshaft or gearbox. They suggested I change the driveshaft first and if the noise is still there, it will likely be a costly gearbox fix.

Appreciate if anyone can help especially if they have had the same problem before. I had my ride lifted about 1.5 - 2 inches almost 2 years ago. So I am suspecting (and hoping) it is just the driveshaft wearing out.

I would appreciate if someone can PM me where I can get a high angle driveshaft installed and the rough price to expect. If it is really the driveshaft, hopefully it will last longer.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice anyone can give.

Bro, check the noise diagnosis on the webpage. I for once experience a continuous thud/click sound from the left side of my ride and the sound cycle got faster when accelerate and slower when decelerate. However it turns out to be a small metal piece stuck in bet the left rear tyre groove. After it was removed, the sound is gone. If you're on ATs sometimes small stones stuck in between the tyre groove will give a click sound.

Worn CV Joint

Post by Kev10 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:13 pm

Hey Bro

Thanks for the advice. I managed to get the problem resolved. Turns out it was a worn CV joint. I think that it wore out prematurely due to my raised suspension set up.

My workshop sent the CV joint out to be re-conditioned. I guess that they probably had a specialist have all the CV joint bearings replaced. It runs smoothly now and I am thankful it was not the gearbox. The next time it wears out again, I will know how it sounds like.

Never go back to the workshop who diagnosed either your drive shaft or gearbox kong!! Like that I also can say. 99% of workshop will always take the shortcut. I once had problem with noise - screaching sound and a workshop in Bukit Merah replace the fanbelt (SGD180) but the sound still persist. I went JB and tried my luck at the workshop there and they found that the bearing at the alternator damaged. Replaced and the sound gone. Cost me RM80.00 only. Unless the workshop is your friend , you have to ask for 2nd 3rd opinion always.

Glad to hear that bro. At least you address the problem early or else if continue driving might damaged the whole drive shaft and to replace it can be costly. Its normal for cv joints to gave way within the 3 yrs onwards depending on road condition and driving style. Can pm me the workshop you went to? I will want to check them out if it happen to me

The best way to cope with noises is to put your wife beside you. You will tgen start to appreciate the minor noises you have in your car as she is more noisy.
