Run in period for Honda Civic

Hi guys,

I have a query on the normal run-in period for honda civic.

I am currently slightly over the 3100 km point but my FC is really bad, around 8.5 to 9.2 km/l on stock. Normal travel pattern 50% city 50% highway with 2 persons. Is this normal?

for Japanese car, its 1000km
but it matter how you run them during that period, too bad its over for you

my recommended run in method, try to hit top rpm if road condition permits
for below 1.6 cc, top rpm at 3000
for above 1.8 cc top rpm at 4000

its not surprising you get that kind of mileage as the road you travel matters
getting rid of excess weight will helps
tire pressure need check every week, best at 250kpa

if you can, switch to 0W30 or better 0W20 engine oil might helps

I am quite surprise on this as my SE advise me against go beyond 3k rpm before my first 1K servicing.

Thinking of changing my engine oil to from 5W40 to 5W30 in my next servicing to improve the FC.

Any one have an idea how much the stock rim (16") for 1.8 civic weight? Thinking of changing to a lighter set of rims too.

new car can take 0W20 but once it "sit in" with the higher viscosity
its not recommended to downgrade to lower viscosity oil
but upgrading not an issue

tire easily weight 8-9kg , rim almost as much
shaving a few kgs off will not differ the mileage
best option remove that spare tire which weight 10kg

rim/tire weight affect more on performance rather than mileage
imagine you are jogging with army boot compare to track shoe
it provide more traction and goes easy on the suspension

train your right leg most important than upgrade which save minimum

Firstly, it is FD what?
FD1 and FD2 different FC
But overall, the FC will range between 9-11 for FD1/2 so it's quite normal.

There are people (like myself) who the day i get the car i redline liao hehe...
Different methods of "running in". Both are totally different styles..but both well documented online...

As for engine oil, i've tried 0w30 or 40, i honestly find no difference in FC.
But in theory, 0w40 provides more "protection" and is usually cheaper so i've switched back to w40 oil...

Saw from a poll over that the another thread at Civic FD/ FN folder that over 60% are able to achieve 10 km/l or better on their FD Civic 1.8 VTi-S Auto.

That's why I am wondering why mine is only around 8.5 to 9.2 km/l

I'm getting less than what u have when doing 50/50 city/hiway. If I can get ur figures I be happy!

Wow, that's bad? Worse than me...

Are you driving with 5 passengers load or heavy boot daily? Most of the time, I am driving with only 1 other passenger on weekdays. Only in weekends do I get full 5 people in the car.

Just drive normally and it will be fine...

Wacking the car till redline a couple of times during the period can be a good thing too.

There's no need to baby the engine too much.

Anyway, most of the car's are redlined at the factory before delivery - otherwise the rings will never set in properly, especially when you baby the engine.

Just one driver only. Not heavy foot also. Got stuff in boot but not that heavy the most 10kg~15kg. Drive in malaysia hiway can hit 13km/L or better.
