AH GEEEZ you're not helping! poison! lol

But seriously, how much can the 4AT of the SiR take? How much will it cost to "strengthen" it? I did a search actually, but those topics on the EK4a's tranny seem to be hidden (ie. the topic you have requested is unavailable...something like that)

Do you guys happen to have any literature on the EK4A auto --> manual OR articles related to the auto's tolerances, specifications and so on? Been searching high and low on yahoo/google but I've come up short :( pardon the ignorance.

Is that your EK at Sepang? I might've taken a few pictures of your car if you've attended SGtrackies' track days or time attacks in the past where there's only ONE black EK4 running around..if i'm not wrong that is...heh
I haven't had as much opportunity to go up to Sepang these days, so the current look of my car should just about reflect what it is, so if you took pictures of a Choon's liveried pre-facelifted Ek4 with black rims, then yes it should be me lah!! Previously I was running the stock EK4 rims and I don't think there would be any other joker that would take a black EK4 with stock rims on track lah, so if you have pics of that it should be me as well lah hahah!!

The pics in my signature are from the last MPT Time Attack (2008 2nd round)... :D

There is another black facelifted EK4 sedan that also joins SGTrackies track days, I've met with him at PG and SIC before... 8)
nikolaiski wrote: I guess the idea of an engine that revs to 7000+ rpm that is an automatic is just a little wierd to me, especially if it's a honda..you know ..itchy backside n all..heh
The stock B16A5 automatic revs a bit lower than the manual A4; the rev counter starts blipping itself around 400rpm lower than the manual. But hey, it's still producing power at that type of revs, unlike most other comparable cars of its era!
nikolaiski wrote: but in the end I might just keep the car running as it is until I come around to buying a whole Bxx block (haven't thought of it yet...) but I guess that'll be in the last thing after all the other chassis upgrades in the future..IF i even get around to doing those..no point doing a slapdash job for a very capable-running car :o)
I've been down this road before, the EK4 autobox handles well even if power and torque is bumped up.... B18 and built B20's are fine, depending on how hard you wanna push the baby. There are also ways and means to make an automatic to manual conversion last, but yes, do a proper job and not a slapdash effort, cos you will regret a short while down the road if the conversion isn't done properly!

Anyways, the automatic is quite a gem to throw around on track as well....I've brought the automatic to many a Sepang and Pasir Gudang session, and managed to have as much fun as the next dude!
nikolaiski wrote: As a moot point...does Hayden or some other brand make auto-tranny coolers for the EK4A? I would want to be investing in those as I've ruined my old car's auto-box before by hard-lining it without the proper cooling..heh
I was running a HKS ATF cooler, I've since sold that to a bro driving an automatic WRX, but yes Hayden makes ATF coolers with reliable cores. Match a good ATF cooler with premium and reliable ATF fluid and you're good to go! If you thrash the car around alot, just change ATF as per a manual car would change the gear oil. For these cases, throw the handbook recommended fluid change intervals out the window!

really been a long time sice we catch up,
when this thread came by, i was thinking,
where is joe, he is the best person that can advise on all the details.
a friend did that and guess wat, his gearbox fell off when he was driviing along pie. all in all, it took him close to 3 months to get all settled, as some parts not avialble and need to import from japan etc..
i think the work shop plays a part in this case, but soem work shop just want to earn mony only.
anything Boleh.. i
anyway, hope to be able to attend meet up and catch up with you soon.
Haha let's just say I have a Quaife LSD in my gearbox now, but its still the same old car, hmmm?

So yeah, I've played the automatic for quite a bit, went through 3 autoboxes (EK4, GSR, then back to EK4) before I finally had a change of faiths...... Not that I really wanted to change lah, but it came to a point where I needed to improve myself further and thus so loh...

I still miss the automatic very very much though.... :?

Its been almost a year liao, everything is working fine, my workshop was spot on reliable in this respect lah.....

Lemme know if you gonna turn up at the meetups man, I bumped into our mutual bro CINDY_LUV a few times and your name also popped up in the conversation haha!!

From experience, a good condition EK4A autobox can easily take arpound low 200's bhp and low 20+ kg of torque, crank figures... If you drive it "normally", the box wouldn't even wear much different from if you were running it stock!

The GSR autobox has crappier ratios and only takes around the same type of figures, so don't be fooled by the "bigger engine better gearbox" reasoning.....

With good quality top notch ATF and a good ATF cooler, even if you run a manual radiator and thus the ATF cooler is standalone, you can even bring this setup to the track with not much worries!

If you gun it like a freako on steroids all the time, than you should be looking a replacing your autobox on a yearly basis, assuming you drive on a daily basis!

You can send your gearbox to the States for custom strengthening work. Most of these jobs involve increasing your stall speeds to higher RPMs, but they affect normal driveability so I feel its actually not a good investment. And there is no guarantee that it would not fail if subjected to higher levels of abuse from a potent engine as well!

Read an article that the B16A Autobox actually shifts like a manual...its one of the more special gearboxes that Honda developed for DOHC VTEC and the article also mentioned that its different from the other B series autos without VTEC like the CR-V.
How hard can it be?

Damn..you've given me something to think about .. a 190-200bhp/19-20kg/m output engine would indeed be great for everyday driving.. but thanks man..i'll probably meet you guys up when i get around to purchasing the damn thing (hopefully by) mid-june.

You should have jumped on it.
At that price, I was surprised it didn't go even earlier...

Well don't feel too bad, because that auto SiR is 15hp down from its manual counterpart. Though a very straight and tidy car, I saw that it has a leaking head gasket. So its not perfect. But which 10 year old car would be?
