DIY Day Part 6: Postponed to May

Hi Pete,

Just search thru your DIY of the oil catch tank again and i am interested to DIY one myself similar to your setup too.

Materials to buy :
a) Container - Get those cheap cheap Alu water bottle....
b) Hoses - 5/16" dia - 2m ?
c) Hose clips - 5 or 6 pcs
d) Telfon tape - 1 small roll
e) Metal wool - put in container
f) T or Y joints needed for the PCV hose?
g) Brass hose fittings. 1 L shape + 2 norm. Need any on the PCV outlet,
Drainage outlet need one?

My problem is -
Need to get the hose fittings fixed in the container ready before any installation to be carried out under your guidance.
Fabrication of mounting brkts also a headache.

Anyway to assist?

ok just to highlight a few things about the oil catch can DIY

if you guys can provide me the materials, i'll be more than happy to help you out with the drilling and fabrication.. BUT it's alot of hassle, and i can't guarantee a good result with the sealing.. i had 2 failed attempts at it.. (ask kuanie, we were supposed to do his.. but after that he just went and bot a used cusco one for $70 and we installed it together.. saved an infinity of trouble.. )

i have to admit this.. you don't save too much by DIYing a can.. material cost will come up to about $50.. more if you screw up.. so maybe it'd be better for you to dig up a used cusco or something.. and i'll help you guys install it

LED from autobacs, abt $4.90.

Wires, abt $1.00

Easy to connect, difficulty level depends on where you want to locate the LED.

DIY VTEC Indicator Light:

Mat'l

1.) 12 V LED (Can get from Autobacs, near the switches dept. pretty nicely finished ones with chrome ring, abt $5.00/pc green and blue only, Alternatively can get from SimLim Tower, raw ones.)

2.) Resistor (You need this if you want the LED to be dimmer. I do without this.)

3.) Wires. Any 2 thin copper electrical wires.

Tools

a) Black Tape
b) Scissors for wire stripping
c) Drill, for mouting. (I drilled my spare switch plate - the one next to the power mirror switches and mounted the light there)

Time taken to tap the VTEC signal is abt 10mins. To position it in your location and wiring it there will take abt an hour.

Hi Bro, think I've meet you at the Kallang meet-up. Just to to comment on your DIY project.

1) The LED with chrome ring (which I used too) comes in RED, which IMO
looks better (look fierce). Can be purchase at Sim Lim for all color. just
look out for some which is mat in color (not so bright).

2) You don't only use this when you want it dimmer. If you do without
resistor, then you better have extra LED in hand. At 12V your LED will
blow within minutes. I have burn a lot of LED during my trial.

3) Use black (-) and red (+) color so you don't confuse and put wire the
other way round. if you invert them it woundnt work.

One thing I wound advise to get is the black heat shrink tube cost abot $1 per metre at simlim. After solder your resistor to the LED, slip the heat shrink tube in to isolate the + & - . you can heat shrink by heating the tube with the same soldering iron. If the + short the - , there goes a fuse. another $1 gone. I must have blow at least 5 fuse.

if you decide to strip the Vtec Soleniod valve wire (yellow/green), b very careful, it is very tiny wire, you would want to cut them into half. For me, I just plug my wire in the connector without striping them.

Hi bro, Thanks for the tips. Yes, do agree that your method is more secure and professional! For the LED, as it was from Autobacs, the ratings are meant for cars, so far, still serves me alright. You're right that the sim lim ones needs resistor. So, bros here, pls note.

& yes, I nearly severed the VTEC wire while stripping it... so your method of plugging in is better.

BTW, you shld come for the DIY meetup as well. I think you can volunteer your knowledge on DIY the grills at the bumper areas... its cheaper....this is one mod that I may do on that day....
