So put or no put. In nut shell, N is useless ahhh
better not lah. just my 2 cents. by the way singapore traffic red light very fast what put to N than a while must put back to D. sure very fast up the lorry one.the N is for u to push your car a bit and for the workshop guys to turn the wheel to check.... because if at D the front 2 wheel does not move. as for me i very seldom put to N unless the traffic very bad and does not move at all i will normally put to P better, like that no need to press the brakes what right..... hope it helps..

so i'd assume constantly changing from D to S on a CVT gearbox will cause it to have a faster "wear-out" rate?

asking this becos i dun wanna do something tt will adversely affect it.. simply putting it.. from D immdly change to P while on the move, this will up lorry the CVT very fast.. but constantly D to S changes??

calvin_ wrote:as far as i know, it is for the following reasons:
1) Provides a buffer between D and R.
2) Meant for short waiting when you do not wish to engage the tranmission lock (P). (some cars, very rare though, cannot wait in Neutral)
3) Meant for freewheeling. By this i mean like when you want to jack up a car to tyre change, or check. or towing, you want to handpush your car without starting the engine.

In modern fuel injected engines, by putting to N to freewheel the car, doesn't save fuel. even if it does, it's insignificant. according to some sources, it wastes fuel. but like i say, insignificant.
yeah it should more towards waste fuel as ur gear engine brakes.. which is very very little drag from my last auto experience. this little drag however lets ur engine detect no load compared to idle. so when 'freewheeling in D' ur engione will lean out your fuel.

please correct me if i am wrong as this is wat i noticed on an ek4a.

and N is used to wheelskid so u can rev b4 entering D eahhaehaehaea :)

Neutral gear

Post by patan » Fri Aug 14, 2009 10:00 am

Auto cars are not meant to be switched to Neutral while the car is moving. Like most of the members have indicated. It is only meant to be used when stopping at traffic light or any other temporary stops.

The controversy is some people say switching too much between N and D will wear out the gearbox. I personally do not agree with that, because I attended a car mechanic course some years back and the wear is very minimal if not negligible.

On the other hand, when auto cars put on D constantly when vehicle is stopped, it may have more wearing at the clutch plate. You will know that your clutch plate worn out when you are at a slope and you release your brakes when on D, and the car rolls downwards.

Hope this is helpful.

I would say moderate frequency shd be ok. Of cos, the type of lubricants of the CVT GB you used do plays a part to withstand the tolerance level and prevention of the GB. Regular maintaneous is required if you wish to cont the same lifestyle you wish to adapt for freq D to S change

Change the CVT oil at 20 or 30K interval.... that should keep your GB in good condition...
