Anything bigger than 215/45/17 in front will reduce your ability to TURN. your oversized tyres will rub against the wheel well before you can do a 'full lock'
if you force it you might BURST your own tyres... in front.
For the rear you can stagger and put up to 245/35/17 if you like...
your car must be quite powerful to be able to efficiently use such huge tyres,

What would the side effects be if the rear tires are changed to 245/35/17 besides slower pick-up? Larger turning radius? Understeering?

no side effects... rear is only being 'towed' along as the ES is front wheel drive... it won't affect steering geometry as long as your huge tyres don't rub against the wheel arch or wheel well at the back... do note that it will be much heavier, and rolling resistance will be higher from stand still starts... once moving, the inertia would be quite alright...
it would be interesting to see someone stagger at such a huge rear... on the ES... the drum brake would be an interesting eyesore tho... unless you already converted to discs at the back.

Nope. I have not done a rear disc conversion, though I am thinking of an upgrade to the master brake pump so that I can make better use of the 4-pot calliper. The rear is just a wild idea as I saw a Mercedes E class that has a 265 wide rear tires and a 245 wide front tires. Not sure how does that balance out. Think it works for that Mercedes since it should be rear wheel drive.
