Near 8 year old ES5 Auto at 70k Servicing

Have not been posting in SHC for years .... Need some advices from the experts here.

My 7 year 9 mth ES5 Auto is reaching its 70,000km soon. It was previously an off-peak car for 4 good years before I convert back to normal car 3 months ago.

Questions :

1) In the coming 70k servicing, do I need to change the timing belt or should I wait for 80k, which will likely to clock when my car is 8.5 year old ? My concern is the age of the belt even it is used for less than 70k....

2) If Question 1 is a Yes, I was told by my workshop to get the following (which I plan to buy from Thian Seng at Waterloo Rd)

a. Timing Belt
b. Tensioner
c. Water Pump
d. Power Steering Belt
e. Air Compressor Belt
f. Plug Shield
g. “Bar-Kah-Neeâ€

With the ridiculous car price, I may have to renew my COE at 10 year

See the sticky posted by bro Mervynsng. if your car is coming to 8 years, you have to do it all for peace of mind...

Radiator fluid if you do major service such as timing belt, you will need to change out the water pump, which requires you to drain out the radiator fluid... u want to recycle and put it back??? can la... just tell your mechanic... just avoid the roll eyes reaction, and get ready for 'additional' labour charges for carefully draining, storing, and filtering, and replacing radiator fluids later... likely they won't filter for you... so good luck...


it would also be good to check the condition of your radiator rubber hoses. for cracks and leaks. if one spoil, replace the 4 pieces... all on queue to fail already.


if money is concern... then do minimal. spoil den say. but things like water pump, changing it requires the same operation as timing belt change... labour charges will be more expensive than the pump itself. advice is to do it all now and incur only one labour charge. - that will save money on the long run.


not to mention workshop down time and loss of use.

or you join the group going to Thailand in Dec or Jan. fix everything at a huge discount... you can wait because you are not at '80k' yet... so to speak.

70k just change oil and filter can leow.

Decided to bring forward the change to 70k for the peace of mind since I will still have to do it whether now (70k) or at 80k. Anyway, my ES5 will likely to hit around 90k~100k because it turns 10 years old. I can risk it by not changing them since it will be scrapped in 2 years. Also in case I am going to extend my COE ... Just got the parts from Thian Seng this morning. I got the Radiator Coolant and ATF as well. But did not get the rubber hoses because I read your post too late. Let my workshop assess next week. Damage for all the parts is $550.

Next will need to get the Mobil 1 engine oil because they got no stock.

I guess include labour - the total damage may be $1k.

What do you think the COE would be when your car reaches 10?? Or maybe new measure will be out soon in the next few months, they will be no more extension for car reaching 10. Me thinking of extending too.

Tensioner can change at 160k but water pump suppose to change every 80-100k if you redline very often. I change at 160k but skip at 240k lets see what happen till 320k.

I never floor or redline my car. Actually seldom cross 3k rpm. Guess my mechanic a bit kaisu, asking to change the sensors, tensioner etc at 70k service. Cause me lots of damage$

YOUR car is 8 years old. Even if you bubble wrap it all this time, some components will fail over time due to AGE. nothing to do with use or abuse.

It's an extremely LOW MILAGE car at under 70K after all this time. U should keep it. Most of our ES (at least, those who come for meetup, are hitting way past 200,000km, some crossed the 300,000km mark already... you have not even come near to 6 figures... and first timing belt change... haha change everything la...

Many of us did 3 rounds already... some gone fourth round even... welcome to fixing up your ES time


btw, if you never pass your car tru 3,000rpm for long time... very likely your VTEC is dead... time to overhaul the vtec solenoid and change out the gasket, and do a top overhaul to check out your 16 valves... likely 4 of them seized...

Yes, I am planning to extend my COE for another 5 ~ 10 years since it is so low mileage while waiting for COE to dip ...

I will give VTEC a try when the part replacement is done next week. Hope it is still working.

Bro, my car just finished service, I tried to ram it just now to 5krpm, how to know (feel) the VTEC kick in ?

stationary 5k rpm or 1st and 2nd gears 5,000 rpms?

you should feel as if your ass is trying to catch up with the rest of you when vtec kicks in...
