change to tyre size 235/55/17 need advice....

Post by capizacko_82 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:49 am

i'm currently using 225/55/17 kumho escta spt

Plan to change tyres end of this month. Still searching for good tyres with good peformance yet low noise.

Questions:
1) anyone using size 235/55/17? any comments?
2) recommendations on tyres for our crossroad? i don't do offroad.
3) recommended shops for wheel allignment?
4) tyre pressure?

I am on the Kumho Ecsta SPT's too.. but size is 235/55/17. They work well and are quite decent in the dry and wet conditions, even at speed. I've always used Kumho tires... used 11 sets of KH-11's in my last 2 cars over a period of 4.5 years, plus they were the first tires on my XRD 2 years ago. But I change tires normally at 20-25000 km, so my info on tire wear will not be too accurate... as I change them before they are totally worn out. My rule for tire change is: Whenever the car twitches 3 times in succession when I run through a puddle during the same rainy drive at 100 km/h on the hwy, I will give my tire shop friend a call.

So my suggestion is still Kumho's. The SPT's are good.

Alignment - go to Aesop Auto at AMK ind park 2. Sazali, malay alignment technician will wow you with his knowledge. He was the recommended alignment person I was told to see by gR years ago, and I have not gone elsewhere since. gR's race tuned cars still go there if I am not mistaken.

Tire pressure - Ran 35 psi front, 33 psi rear when on Yoko Geolanders 225-60/17. now back on Kumho's, running 33 front and 31 rear.

FC is around 9.5 - 10 km/l for City driving, and 13 km/l for NS Hwy driving. So I figure this is about right.

I normally get my tires from Guan Seng Tire on Upper East Coast Road just after Frankel Ave before Siglap Road. Ask for Winston at 64481428. They normally order the Kumho's for me as they do not keep stock... but all my many sets were bought from them.

I do not know if they are better priced at Guan Seng, but I like their service, so I have never gone elsewhere to check.

what type of owl you referring? You want the 'Outline' or 'Raised' white lettering?

If Outlined tyres, can consider Dunlop Grantrek or Yoko If raised white lettering, go for Falken cos it's nicer.

You can try Nexen Roadian HT, currently on my ride, much quieter than my previous Continental Touringcontact, both are with raised white lettering.

thanks for the recommendation bro..

i'm currently running on 18"...tires need to be changed soon and I was thinking of going for smaller rims but fatter tires..

would you know of any shops which would do a trade in for my 18" rims for smaller 4X4 types?

Hi bro, if you are referring to Grantrek, then that one is not 'raised' but 'outlined' white lettering. There's a difference. So far I had only seen 'raised' on the Falkens.

In my personal opinion, I prefer the 'raised' white lettering over the OWL cos looks much nicer. If you need further infor, can PM me and can share with you my experiences etc.

Fitting Grandtrek AT3

Post by Kev10 » Thu Aug 26, 2010 5:45 pm

Hi all

I am new to the forum and I am thinking of fitting the Dunlop Grandtrek AT3 (225/70/R16). I am fitting this after doing a 1.5 inch (4 cm) lift to the front and back. An alternative I am considering is the Yoko Geolander 215/70/R16 from Stamford tire also available with OWL.

Appreciate if you can share your experience with the Dunlop tire. I met a RAV4 driver there and he commented that the Dunlop will be noisier compared to the Yoko. I read a review on the Dunlop, the feedback was positive and that it said that it was designed to be quiet.

I am also not sure if it will be a problem clearing the fenders but I will share my exprience if I do the fitting. I already saw some fellow XRD drivers with this tire, hope you can let me know your experience.

Kev
