Overhaul CL7A Auto Transmission

Post by ferrari7 » Tue Dec 01, 2015 10:05 pm

Hi bros, my 9.5 year old CL7A clocked 360,000km last week. COE expiring April 2016 but I have decided to renew COE 10 yrs because it's still a sharp looking, cheap to maintain reliable right-sized Japanese car with double wishbones and a good sounding engine with very direct throttle response (mechanical throttle). It's perfect.

Have changed Honda ATF-Z1 diligently every 20,000km since day 1 but of late there have been 3 problems.

i) Delayed engagement of D from N during each morning cold start. Takes at least 3 seconds and up to 8 seconds for D to engage from N. And it engages with a HUGE jerk without fail.

ii) Obvious delayed engagement from 2nd to 3rd when using Steptronic. About half to 1 second slower than other gears.

iii) Whining sound from 5000rpm on - only in 1st and 2nd gears. But am not sure if transmission related.

Any bros with similar experience? Should I repair or get a low mileage unit in from Japan? And most important of all - any workshop in particular to recommend?

Thanks!

Ah Heng (SKM) quoted $2600 including labour. He seemed confident.
Will take 5-6 days he said.

I might just let him take on the job later this month.

Does the price includes full gearbox overhaul, i.e. replace all the clutch plates, and solenoids?

Did you get any quotes from JB workshop?

Ah Heng mentioned clutch plates but didn't talk about solenoids. . .

Still mulling over it. Car is perfectly fine once warmed up.

375,000 km now. Only opened engine once at 200,000km to adjust cam timing (done personally by Ah Heng). So yes - it's stock.

On Hurricane air filter since day 1.
Every 10,000 km change Amsoil OW20 / German Castrol 0W30 / Mobil 1 OW40.
Every 20,000 km drain fill Honda Z1 ATF
Every 30,000km change NGK Iridium.

Always using Steptronic, drag gear, redline, hard launch all.. . Engine doesn't eat oil at all. Still cruises for long stretches at 180kmh in Malaysia easy. Aircon original and never serviced before - I have never topped up Freon before. Still colder than new BMWs. Bloody tough car . . .

You can get the tyranny fix without more worries, or drive until it conked out, call tow truck and get it overhauled.

Either way looks like it's gonna be a keeper :)

@390,000km, Transmission suddenly slipped badly in 3rd and 5th gears without prior warning.

Hobbled to 3Motorwerkz at Khaki Bukit and overhauled the transmission for $1800 all in. Gaskets, Clutches and 3rd gear solenoid were all replaced with Honda Genuine Parts.

Excellent workshop with great experience in overhauling Honda 5 Speed Automatics. I surveyed several workshops over several months prior to this overhaul and chose them because they were able to show me that they had actual experience working on the Honda 5-AT gearbox.

Note Honda Automatics are akin to a robotized manual gearbox and very different from the planetary automatics used in 99% of all other cars.

Car runs like new again. 8)

Hi, thanks for the tip!

I have just renewed 10 years COE on my Cl7 too. My gearbox has started to feel a little strange, sometimes shifting down when it doesn't have to, but good to know there are experienced workshops out there who can do an overhaul.

Re robotised manual - no wonder I feel the car doesn't really hold on an upslope! Makes sense now. But it's still a torque converter box, isn't it?

Yes still with conventional torque converter.

Someone in Idaho has a 860,000km one . . . still going strong.
